Rules / Skills / Stealth

Stealth

You're skilled at avoiding notice: slipping past foes, hiding, and concealing items. See Detecting Creatures in Encounters for the Observed, Hidden, Undetected and Unnoticed states.

Actions

Conceal an Object (Manipulate, Secret)

You hide a small object on your person, such as a light-Bulk weapon. When you try to sneak it past someone who might notice, the GM rolls your Stealth check and compares it to that passive observer's Perception save, using the same result for every passive observer. Someone deliberately searching you can roll Perception against your Stealth result and finds it on a success. You can also hide an object somewhere other than on yourself (in undergrowth, or a secret compartment in furniture); anyone Seeking in the area compares their Perception check to your Stealth result.

Success: The object stays hidden.

Failure: The searcher finds the object.

Hide (Secret)

You tuck in behind cover or greater cover, or deeper into concealment, to become hidden rather than observed. The GM rolls your Stealth check in secret against the Perception save of each creature that can see you but that you have cover from or are concealed from. Your cover's levels of Advantage apply to the check.

Success: If the creature could see you, you're now hidden from it instead of observed; if you were already hidden from or undetected by it, you stay that way. If you lose your cover or concealment from it, you become observed again. Doing anything except Hide, Sneak or Step ends it: if you Strike a creature you have 1 level of Advantage on that attack and then become observed; anything else makes you observed just before you act, unless the GM decides otherwise (a particularly quiet action might go unnoticed, perhaps with another Stealth check). If a creature finds you by Seeking, you must Hide successfully to become hidden from it again.

Sneak (Move, Secret)

You move up to half your Speed while trying to stay or become undetected (you can Sneak while burrowing, climbing, flying or swimming instead, at half that Speed). If you're undetected by a creature and it can't possibly see you (you're invisible, it's blinded, or you're in darkness it can't see in), any critical failure on your Sneak counts as a failure, and you stay undetected even without cover or concealment. At the end of your movement the GM rolls your Stealth check in secret against the Perception save of each creature you were hidden from or undetected by when you started. Cover or greater cover all the way gives +2 or +4 (Taking Cover doesn't add more while moving). You don't roll against a creature you're neither concealed from nor in cover from at the end; it observes you automatically.

Success: You stay undetected by the creature during and after your movement. You become observed as soon as you do anything but Hide, Sneak or Step; if you Strike, the creature is still Off-Guard against that attack and then observes you; anything else makes you observed just before you act unless the GM decides otherwise. Speaking or making a deliberate loud noise makes you hidden instead of undetected. If a creature Seeks and you become hidden to it, you must Sneak again to become undetected.

Failure: A telltale sign gives away your position, but you're still unseen: you're hidden from the creature during and after your movement.

Critical Failure: You're spotted: the creature observes you during and after your movement. If you're invisible and were hidden from it, you're hidden instead of observed.
