Magical Potions

A magical potion is a consumable made by suspending a spell's aetheric energy and intent in a prepared brewing vessel; drinking it releases the spell on the drinker. Only spells with the Brewable trait can be brewed.

Brewing Talent

Requirements: the Magical Crafting talent, 4 ranks in Crafting and 4 ranks in Mysticism. Brewing magical potions needs this Crafting-tree talent, which unlocks the Brew spell modifier.

Brew (+3). A special spell modifier that casts a valid spell into a prepared brewing vessel instead of resolving it at once. It raises the spell's Complexity and Strain by 3. Any material components the spell needs go into the vessel when it's cast and are used up in the potion. A brewed potion's level is the minimum level needed to cast the spell inside it with its current modifiers, not counting Brew.

Batch Brewing

You can brew up to 4 potions in a batch: pay the spell's base Strain once per potion, and the Brew modifier only once for the whole batch. Example: a spell with base Strain 3, brewed as a batch of 4, costs 15 Strain in total (3 per potion, plus 3 once for Brew).

Potion Material Costs

Besides any spell components, brewing needs herbs, solvents, salts, distilled reagents and other materials, paid once per potion: level 1–4: 25 silver; 5–10: 100 silver; 11–16: 400 silver; 17+: 1,200 silver.

The Brewing Challenge

Brewing uses the normal crafting challenge, setup time and DC structure for magical crafting, but you may roll Mysticism instead of Crafting. On a Critical Success, the potion gains the Stable trait.

  • Surge check: when a brewed potion is drunk, make a flat check against DC 8 + half the potion's level (rounded down). On a failure, the potion triggers a Wild Surge.
  • Stable: a Stable potion's surge check has Fortune.
  • Overlevel use: if a creature drinks a potion of higher level than its own, the surge check has Misfortune. A potion that is both Stable and overlevel for the drinker rolls normally (they cancel).
