Saves
Saves are your ability to resist something threatening you from outside: a trap, poison, mind control, a large object falling on you and the like. The GM calls for saves as needed; you don't choose to make them.
A save works like a check: roll 1d20 + the relevant ability score, but add your save bonus instead of skill ranks. Your save bonus is ¾ of your level, rounded down (table below). Succeeding usually means you avoid a harmful effect or danger; failing almost always has a consequence.
Might Saves
- Someone attacks you with a melee weapon and you try to block or parry it.
- A portcullis drops on you and you try to stop it crushing you.
- A giant or other powerful creature tries to grab or overpower you.
Reflex Saves
- Someone attacks you with a ranged weapon and you try to dodge it.
- An explosion, spray of acid or burst of shrapnel comes your way and you try to avoid it.
- You slip, lose your footing or fall, and try to catch yourself before disaster.
Fortitude Saves
- Poison strikes and your body tries to resist it.
- You're exposed to disease, plague or rot and must endure it.
- You're put through pain, exhaustion or bodily stress and must push through.
Intellect Saves
- A spell or effect tries to cloud your reasoning, confuse your thoughts or overwhelm your mind with false conclusions.
- A psychic effect attacks your logic, memory or ability to think clearly.
- A supernatural force tries to deceive your judgment rather than your senses.
Perception Saves
- You pass near a hidden danger (a trap, an ambush, a concealed threat) and have a chance to notice it without actively searching.
- Another creature tries to sneak up on you or do something subtle unnoticed; you make a Perception save against its roll.
- An illusion, disguise or odd behavior gives off subtle signs, and you try to read between the lines.
Charisma Saves
- A mystic tries to charm you, frighten you or dominate your will.
- A terrifying monster or supernatural presence tries to break your nerve.
- A magical effect tries to overwhelm your emotions, crush your confidence or force your mind into submission.
