Virtues & Vices

After setting your origin's four personality aspects (Quirk, Ideal, Pledge and Flaw), pair each with a Virtue or a Vice from the lists below. You must end up with exactly 2 Virtues and 2 Vices: if your first three pairings already lock in two of one kind, the fourth is automatically the other kind.

When you're in a situation tied to one of your aspects, you may approach it through that aspect's paired Virtue or Vice. If you do, you and the GM may use the Stakes Menu to raise the scene's tension.

Stakes Menu

Some fitting costs or rewards when a Virtue or Vice comes into play. It isn't exhaustive, and nothing is owed automatically: the player and GM pick together whatever suits the moment.

  • 1 Fate Die.
  • 1 level of Advantage (or Disadvantage) on the next relevant check or save.
  • A little Strain recovered (or spent).
  • A minor narrative boon: a favor owed, a scrap of information, a moment's better position.
  • A complication or hook the GM can call back later.
  • Anything else that fits the fiction (GM's call).

Virtue: play the moment holding firm to your Virtue despite real pressure or cost, and spend one item from the Stakes Menu for a fitting benefit.

Vice: play the moment giving in to your Vice, and gain one item from the Stakes Menu; the GM introduces a fitting complication.
