Derived Statistics
Several values on your sheet come from your ability scores:
- Max HP = (Fortitude + 5) × (level + 2). It's retroactive: if your Fortitude changes, so does your Max HP. Example: level 5, Fortitude 2: (2 + 5) × (5 + 2) = 49.
- Strain limit = 5 + level + Fortitude. Past it, further Strain causes Exhaustion (see Encounters).
- Save bonus is based on ¾ of your level, rounded down; see the advancement table.
- Speed comes from Might + Reflex (table below), which also sets your travel pace.
| Might + Reflex | Speed | Feet per minute | Miles per hour | Miles per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −5 or less | 10 ft | 100 ft | 1 | 8 |
| −4 to −3 | 15 ft | 150 ft | 1½ | 12 |
| −2 to −1 | 20 ft | 200 ft | 2 | 16 |
| 0 to 1 | 25 ft | 250 ft | 2½ | 20 |
| 2 to 3 | 30 ft | 300 ft | 3 | 24 |
| 4 to 5 | 35 ft | 350 ft | 3½ | 28 |
| 6 to 7 | 40 ft | 400 ft | 4 | 32 |
| 8 to 9 | 45 ft | 450 ft | 4½ | 36 |
| 10 or more | 50 ft | 500 ft | 5 | 40 |
Next Steps
Spend your 6 skill points and pick 3 talents (see Skills and Talents), on top of your origin's talent. Then work with the other players to develop your characters' Bonds (see Bonds).
Character Advancement
At each level after 1st you gain 4 skill points and pick 2 more talents, plus the benefits on the advancement table:
- Ability boosts: at every level divisible by four (4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th) you gain one of the six ability-score improvement talents of your choice for free. These can't raise a score above 5.
- Max ranks: the highest rank you can have in any skill at that level.
- Natural Soak: a stacking bonus added to the Soak from armor and other defenses.
- Save bonus: added whenever you make a save with any of your six ability scores.
Experience Points
Characters earn Experience Points (XP) by achieving goals, completing social encounters, exploring new places, fighting monsters, overcoming hazards and other deeds; the GM has a lot of say over when they're awarded. Normally, when a character reaches 1,000 XP or more they level up, subtract 1,000, and start working toward the next level. (Crews can use a shared pool or milestones; see The Crew.)
