During downtime you can invent a common formula you don't know. It works like the Craft activity: pay half the formula's Price up front and make a Crafting check; on a success, finish by paying the difference or keep working to lower the Price. The extra time goes into research, design and development instead of building an item. The finished formula goes into your formula book.
